NEW INTEREST GROUP OPPORTUNITIES

If you would like to coordinate a new remote group or shared experience, please let us know at interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com.

Our club has a corporate Zoom account should you wish to set up a virtual meeting, and it has no time restraints! Just contact Jim Adamson at president.portperryprobus@gmail.com to use it. We are here to help should you want to try a meeting virtually!

CURRENT INTEREST GROUP UPDATES

FEELING CREATIVE?

ART - PROBUS OPEN STUDIO

Margaret Adamson: 905-773-2878

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

Our members come to work on various art media - acrylic, watercolour and oil paints, clay and wood. It is always interesting to share new ideas and works in progress, as well as friendly chats.

Our group meets alternating Thursdays at the Hope Church (1:00 to 4:00 pm). We will continue to meet until the end of June when we take a summer break.

CREATE AND CHAT

Joyce Bagley:  905-985-8064

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

This group’s members have all gone their separate ways so we’re hoping to restart the group with new folks! Hoping to get creative people together with a monthly meet-up sharing one's passion for arts and crafts while conversing/visiting. Please contact the Interest Group chair if you’re interested.

NEW! PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

After sending an eblast last month to our membership, it looks like we 6 interested members!

We are currently working with a local photography guru in the hopes of setting up some in-studio workshops to learn some basics after which we’d have some projects to do and then meet up to see how we did.

If you’d like to join us, please contact interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

EUCHRE – AFTERNOON

Ann Berube: 905-985-7102

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

Regular euchre is played on alternate Friday afternoons, group members taking turns hosting in their homes. We play six or seven games and then adjourn for refreshments and socializing. This group is currently full. If you would like assistance starting a new group, please email or telephone.

EUCHRE – EVENING

Margaret Adamson: 905-773-2878

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

The evening is a mix of starting with card games as well as time for social chatting and refreshments. So far attendance usually fills three tables, which means our membership has had to cap. However, a list of subs helps make the evening more inclusive.

Next date is Tuesday, April 23rd (7:00 p.m.). This group meets once a month on the Tuesday following the week of the General PROBUS meeting.

NEW! JIGSAW PUZZLERS

Denise Throp

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

A couple of PROBUS members have been exchanging jigsaw puzzles and wondered if there are more members who may have puzzles to donate, or who may like to join our sharing group? After sending an eblast to our membership last month, it seems there’s a LOT more than just 2 members who’d like to participate - we’re already at 9!

Some have puzzles to donate, others just to share amongst the group. A idea was mentioned that perhaps there’s a member(s) who might be willing to keep a puzzle on a table in their home & other members can drop by at agreed upon times to work on it & maybe have a coffee or wine visit while doing so?!

We generally seem to prefer 1000 pieces, although we will do 750 and 500, and prefer those that are not overly difficult (or overly easy!). If you are interested in joining this puzzle swap group, please contact the coordinator.

BOOK CLUB

BOOK CLUB - THE NEXT CHAPTER

Janet Border: 416-659-4491

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

We had the longest book club meeting yet for this group as we discussed "Irreversible Damage" by Abigail Shrier. This book was informative and is very polarizing and we all said we would recommend it judiciously and with caution! In April we will read and discuss "West With Giraffes" by Lynda Rutledge.

DINNER – GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER (GWCTD)

Kim Lendvay

Our next GWCTD will be on Saturday April 20th at 6 pm in Port Perry either at Foundry Kitchen or Ciao Bella. Please contact the Kim via email if you’d like to join us.

Joyce Bagley:  905-985-8064

If you’d like an afternoon libation – this is perfect! If you don’t indulge - no problem! This is simply an excuse to get together & chat. We will try out various locations in the area.
We meet on the third Thursday of each month at 4 pm.

10 of us enjoyed the Old Flame Brewhouse on Thursday March 21st.

We’ll be gathering at Old Flame Brewery once again on Thursday April 18th at 4pm. Once patio season opens up, we will be meeting on patios outside the area.

Please let Joyce know via email if you’re planning to join us – of course you can just show up too! Please wear your PROBUS nametag so we can spot each other!

LUNCH GROUP

Ruth Cain: 905-410-6030

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

We had a great turnout this month at Jesters Court, the food was good, everyone enjoyed their meal and there was discount for seniors day! This month’s lunch will be on Wednesday April 24th, location to be determined. Please contact the coordinator.

TRAVELLING FOODIES & FOODIES TOO

Carol Kilmartin

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

This is the first month the Travelling Foodies Groups will meet with the new format of 2 groups; 1st Friday of the month and 2nd Thursday of the month. The groups are capped at 16 and have both reached their capacity. If you would like to add your name to a waitlist, please contact the coordinator.

The coordinator role is shared by Carol Kilmartin, Communications; Mona Mathews, Restaurants & Bookings; Catherine Whittle, Presenter at Probus Meetings. Catherine will attend Friday lunches and Carol and Mona will attend Thursday lunches as hosts. Each month, Carol will contact group members one week prior to the lunch with details about the venue.

WINE TASTING I

Jim Adamson 905-773-2878

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

Our group is very much looking forward to a resumption of our tasting get-togethers now that winter escapes and various other trips have subsided.

GRAPES OF PourT

Barb Langer: 416-805-9223

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

We are on hiatus for February and March, resuming our schedule on April 25.

Our group meets on the last Thursday of the month at 6pm.

Members take turns hosting. The host(s) decides on a theme, selects and buys the wine. All the participants share the cost of the wines and everyone brings a dish to the tasting, so we have a pot-luck style evening of appetizers or dinner. Please contact Barb Langer if you would like to join us!

LET'S GET PHYSICAL!

BLOOMERS - GARDENING

interestgroups.uxbridgeprobus@gmail.com

It’s almost gardening season!

Last year there were a few outings led by Marg Miller and Darla Jemmett. Unfortunately, they’re unable to continue in the coordinator role for this group although there are members still interested in participating. So we are looking for a coordinator – even 2-3 members could co-lead this group.

Last year they met the 2nd Monday of each month and were interested in gardening, swapping & sharing bulbs, seeds, plants and cuttings, even gardening magazines and pictures! They visited garden centres, each other’s gardens and had guest speakers. If you share the vision of this group and love all things garden, please contact the Interest Groups Chair and let’s try to get this group going by May!

HIKING WITH BILL

Bill Morrison

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

The group has hikes on the first and third Fridays of each month. Contact Bill for more information.

LAWN BOWLING

Lynn Tracey

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

Lawn Bowling is just around the corner at Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club. It is a great social sport where you can enjoy the outdoors and get some gentle exercise. Instruction is always available, and first year bowlers are provided equipment free of charge. Our Open Houses are set for May 8 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, and May 11 and 18 from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Come out and give it a try and see how much fun we have!
If you are interested in short mat indoor bowling, you can do that at the Latcham Centre in Port Perry on Thursday afternoon.

On May 5, once again we will be holding a giant yard sale. If you are moving, or just wanting to get rid of "stuff", please feel free to contact me, and I will arrange a pick up.

LATIN DANCE LESSONS

Anne-Marie Sacco

interestgroups.uxbridgeprobus@gmail.com

Latin Dance has been a hit so far! Upcoming classes are April 15 & 22 and May 6 & 27 from 3pm-4pm at Douglas Crossing (6 Douglas Rd., Uxbridge). You do not need to be a couple to join, they pair us up at the lessons, as needed. Each member is required to pay the instructor $15/lesson.

This is a Joint Interest Group with the Uxbridge PROBUS Club. If you're interested in joining this group, please contact interestgroups.uxbridgeprobus@gmail.com. The coordinator is Anne-Marie Sacco.

LINE DANCING
Kim Lendvay
interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

We meet weekly at the Port Perry Legion (484 Bay Street) and it costs $3 per person.
We meet either Monday 1pm (which is sort of Beginners level but closer to Intermediate class) OR Friday 6pm (BEGINNERS ONLY) which is a great way to learn the basics since most of us are just starting. Some of us attend both days!

No experience required – but you gotta enjoy country music, be willing to try to follow some dance steps & be prepared to laugh at ourselves when we mess up.

Contact Kim (Interest Groups Chair) at the above email to be added to the group’s email list. You can let Kim know if you’re planning to attend so we can watch for you or you can just show up as we’ll be there! Please wear your PROBUS nametag so we can spot each other!

PICKLEBALL GROUP

Joanne Nixon and Melba Tenthoray

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

We play weekly – but on different days and at different times – it depends on when you’re available! If you’re interested, please contact Joanne or Melba and they will send you the information on where and when to meet to play.

WALK-ABOUT TOWN

Dianne Draper

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

We meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. at the Scugog St. Tim Hortons. If you’re interested in joining the Walk-About Town group, please contact Dianne and let’s walk together!

MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT

MOVIE GROUP

Denise Throp

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

If you’re looking for someone to go to a movie with sometime, please contact the coordinator.

OTHER NIFTY INTEREST GROUPS

CLIMATE CHANGE

Ginny Colling

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

Our small group found it difficult to find a suitable meeting time so we are putting our group on hold. If anyone is interested in looking at the types of climate action we can take, whether individually or collectively, to help improve outcomes for our grandkids, please contact the coordinator and she will put you on her mailing list to receive environmental information.

FINDING YOUR ROOTS (Formerly GENEALOGY)

Neil Kilmartin

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

We meet the first Wednesday of each month from 10am to noon in the Scugog Library's Board Room. We don't currently meet over the summer. Our group is capped at 12, but we currently have 2 openings, and if anyone is interested in joining us, please contact Neil directly via email. We welcome people with any degree of genealogical experience, right from the newbie to the seasoned family historian. Our focus tends to be on "sharing our individual experiences". Guidance and help in researching is always available.

Our May meeting will feature a member of the Scugog Historical Society who will give us an introduction to what the Society does, and some of the tools they use to investigate genealogy for groups and individuals.

GROUP OF ONES

Denise and Cathy

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

Would you be interested in doing something without your partner? If so, why not join the Group of Ones? The purpose of the Group of Ones group is to facilitate alliances between PROBUS members who would like to participate in some activity with one or more other members. You might be single, or you might have a partner who doesn’t want to go out. Group of Ones is a group of individuals as opposed to couples.

Denise and Cathy maintain the group member list which is shared amongst all group members. Any member may suggest an activity and invite other members of the group to join them. The member proposing the activity would be responsible for coordinating with those who expressed an interest in joining them.

Two members saw Exhibition on screen: Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse in Peterborough on Sunday March 10, preceded by brunch at Cora's, which was very good.

One went on her lonesome to the Museum of Illusions followed by dinner at the St Lawrence Market and then Message in a Bottle at Meridian Hall - a breathtaking new dance-theatre production set to the music of 17-time Grammy Award winner Sting.

The Museum of Illusions was fun, but you really need a camera and at least two people to get the most out of it.

TRAVEL

Tim Casey

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

The Travel Interest Group met on Monday March 4th. We started with our review of group members' recent travels and travel plans. Our main presentation was by Kim Lendvay who  covered her recent Viking River cruise (Pharaohs & Pyramids) along the Nile River in Egypt. That provided the opportunity to learn about Egypt and what to expect should one decide to take a river cruise along the Nile.

Kim also did a separate Short Presentation on Viking Cruises and differences between their Ocean, River & Expedition lines.

The next Travel Interest Group meeting is being delayed by one week and will be held on Monday April 8th at Col. Mustard's Pub in Port Perry at 11:10 am.
