CURRENT INTEREST GROUP UPDATES

FEELING CREATIVE?

ART - PROBUS OPEN STUDIO

Margaret Adamson: 905-773-2878

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

Our members come to work on various art media - acrylic, watercolour and oil paints, clay and wood. It is always interesting to share new ideas and works in progress, as well as friendly chats.

Our group meets alternating Thursdays at the Hope Church (1:00 to 4:00 pm). We will continue to meet until the end of June when we take a summer break.

CREATE AND CHAT

Joyce Bagley:  905-985-8064

This group’s members have all gone their separate ways so we’re hoping to restart the group with new folks! Hoping to get creative people together with a monthly meet-up sharing one's passion for arts and crafts while conversing/visiting. Please contact the Interest Gro\up chair if you’re interested.

PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP

Kim Lendvay

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

Members who have expressed interest in this group have received an email regarding upcoming in-studio workshops that we’ve set up with a local photography guru at which we’ll learn some basics - after which we’ll do some projects and then get feedback on how we did.

If you’d like to be added to this group, please email the Interest Groups Chair at the email above.

Ann Berube: 905-985-7102

Regular euchre is played on alternate Friday afternoons, group members taking turns hosting in their homes. We play six or seven games and then adjourn for refreshments and socializing. This group is currently full. If you would like assistance starting a new group, please email or telephone.

EUCHRE – EVENING

Margaret Adamson: 905-773-2878

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

The evening is a mix of starting with card games as well as time for social chatting and refreshments. So far attendance usually fills three tables, which means our membership has had to cap. However, a list of subs helps make the evening more inclusive.

Next date is Tuesday, May 28th (7:00 p.m.). This group meets once a month on the Tuesday following the week of the General PROBUS meeting.

JIGSAW PUZZLERS

Denise Throp

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

Some of us have jigsaw puzzles to donate, others just to share amongst group members. At our inaugural meeting on April 16th (at break time during our monthly PROBUS meeting) we exchanged loads of puzzles that some members had donated – thank you so very much - many puzzles were brand new!!

We’re hoping there might be a member who’s willing to keep a puzzle ‘on the go’ in their home for other members to come by & work on it sometimes – maybe have a coffee or wine while doing so?

We generally seem to prefer 1000 pieces, although we will do 750 and 500, and prefer those that are not overly difficult (or overly easy!). If you are interested in joining this puzzle swap group, please contact the coordinator.

The Travelling Foodies Groups meet in the new format of 2 groups: 1st Friday of the month and 2nd Thursday of the month. In April, the groups enjoyed a varied menu at Fico Fusion in Port Perry.

In May, the groups will travel to Whitby to enjoy lunch at The Greek Tycoon. We look forward to the "loaded with flavour" dishes like saganaki, souvlaki, seafood, marinated meats and other traditional Greek fare that are always freshly cooked.

If you are interested in one of these groups, email Carol Kilmartin at the email above.

GRAPES OF PourT

Barb Langer: 416-805-9223

Our group meets on the last Thursday of the month at 6pm.

Members take turns hosting. The host(s) decides on a theme, selects and buys the wine. All the participants share the cost of the wines and everyone brings a dish to the tasting, so we have a pot-luck style evening of appetizers or dinner. Please contact Barb Langer if you would like to join us!

OTHER NIFTY INTEREST GROUPS

CLIMATE CHANGE

Ginny Colling

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

Last year, we watched in horror as every province in Canada, and the NWT, saw forest fires burning and heat and wildfire records broken. And not just in Canada. It seemed the whole world was burning! The good news is that we don't have to sit back and watch, we can take action. Climate Conversations is a coffee-shop forum for talking about what we are doing or could be doing to reduce climate impacts and get us to net-zero. Contact the co-ordinator if you're interested in learning more about being part of the solution.

FINDING YOUR ROOTS (Formerly GENEALOGY)

Neil Kilmartin

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

We meet the first Wednesday of each month from 10am to noon in the Scugog Library's Board Room. We don't currently meet over the summer. Our group is capped at 12, but we currently have 2 openings, and if anyone is interested in joining us, please contact Neil directly via email. We welcome people with any degree of genealogical experience, right from the newbie to the seasoned family historian. Our focus tends to be on "sharing our individual experiences". Guidance and help in researching is always available.

Our May meeting will feature members of the Scugog Historical Society who will give us an introduction to what the Society does, and some of the tools they use to investigate genealogy for groups and individuals.

GROUP OF ONES

Denise and Cathy

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

Would you be interested in doing something without your partner? If so, why not join the Group of Ones? The purpose of the Group of Ones group is to facilitate alliances between PROBUS members who would like to participate in some activity with one or more other members. You might be single, or you might have a partner who doesn’t want to go out. Group of Ones is a group of individuals as opposed to couples.

Denise and Cathy maintain the group member list which is shared amongst all group members. Any member may suggest an activity and invite other members of the group to join them. The member proposing the activity would be responsible for coordinating with those who expressed an interest in joining them.

Two members saw Exhibition on screen: Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse in Peterborough on Sunday March 10, preceded by brunch at Cora's, which was very good.

One went on her lonesome to the Museum of Illusions followed by dinner at the St Lawrence Market and then Message in a Bottle at Meridian Hall - a breathtaking new dance-theatre production set to the music of 17-time Grammy Award winner Sting.

The Museum of Illusions was fun, but you really need a camera and at least two people to get the most out of it.

TRAVEL

Tim Casey

interest.portperryprobus@gmail.com

Our April 8th meeting covered travel to Florida's Gulf coast (the part running from Dunedin to Key West). We had lots of good feedback from group members who had been there who provided their recommendations.

Our next meeting is Monday May 6th and will feature Judy Spring giving a slide presentation on her South American cruise. All are welcome! Meet at Col. Mustard's Pub in Port Perry at 11:10 am.
